World Cup, Tapas, and Friendship

I have a confession. I haven’t been watching the World Cup. I know. Having lived in Spain, and Spain being in the running, I should have probably been more interested in it. I’m not much of a sports enthusiast to begin with. I like going to baseball games in person, and I went to a couple of Spurs games when I lived in San Antonio, which was really fun. I’m also a Dallas Cowboys fan for certain personal reasons. But other than that, I don’t care much about sports. I’ll be watching the World Cup final this Sunday, though, for a few reasons.

I did try watching a World Cup game online the other day. I watched about seven seconds before the sound of those damn vuvuzelas started to make me angry, and I had to turn it off. I guess I could have just muted it, but then what’s the point? Part of the fun is listening to the announcers in soccer, especially Spanish announcers when they scream, “GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!”

Anyway, although I’m not much of a sports fan, I do like watching the World Series and the Superbowl. And now, especially since it only comes around once every four years, I’m going to watch the World Cup final this Sunday. Actually, wait. That’s not accurate. I’m only watching for two reasons: because Spain is playing, and because a fellow Rota Admiral, Michelle Wright Caudill, is coming over with her boys to watch with John and me. We’re going to make tapas (including pinchitos!), and I’m making red sangria for Michelle, and white sangria for me. We’re going to grill, eat good Spanish food, enjoy cold sangria in the heat of the afternoon, and spend time with one of our favorite people in the world. And that will make the World Cup more than worth watching.

If you’d like to make some pinchitos yourself, check out the Spanish recipes section at the top of the page!

Always love reading your work Michelle. Sounds like you are going to have a great Sunday :)

I love soccer, learned to love it watching my daughter play for eight to ten years. And as annoying as it is, I love hearing the announcers yell GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!

Have fun making new memories :)

Thanks so much, Cyndi! We did have a great Sunday! :-)
I'd much rather hear the announcers yell “GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!” than those vuvuzelas!
