Help a girl see the world

Janelle EagleI started this blog to share news about fellow Rota Admirals, and I wouldn’t normally include a personal plea like this. No offense to all you parents out there, but I don’t think anyone wants to see the blog turn into a request list for buying gift wrap and Girl Scout cookies. I’m making an exception because of what this young girl is trying to do, and how it hits close to home for us.

We all had the opportunity to live overseas, some of us in more than one country, because our parents were in the military, or were teachers or contractors. We may not have realized it at the time, but we were very lucky. A lot of people never even leave their home state, let alone the country. We got to travel and go places others never get to see.

Fellow Admiral Elaine Brotherton has a cousin who is trying to earn an internship with a travel company. It’s an opportunity that will allow her to see the world and experience at least some of the things we all had the chance to experience when we were young. I don’t know about you, but I never miss a chance to tell people about having lived overseas, how great it was, and how grateful I am for it. Now we can all actually help someone else get there—and maybe live a little vicariously.

Please read this letter from Elaine, and then take a moment out of your day to help her cousin fulfill a dream that we’ve all already lived. Thanks!

“When I moved to the US from Spain 23 years ago, I lived with my aunt, uncle, and six- and four-year-old cousins. Everyone thought four-year-old Janelle was my daughter. I liked to think she was more like a little sister.

I taught her to spell, even though she had no front teeth. When she was old enough, I took her to her first bar and got her a drink with a little umbrella. I’ve watched as she grew into one of the most amazing young women I know. Oh, and because we lived together and have spent so much time together, many of you DGFers have met her!

I drove to LA to watch her production of Vagina Monologues, and then again for her college graduation. She did it in three years with a double major! Can you tell I am a proud cousin? Well, that’s not all she is about!

She is trying to get her dream job with STA Travel to travel the world, document her trips, and report back to people who are interested in traveling. Will you all please watch her video and vote for her? You can also leave a comment on the voting page. If you don’t mind, please ask your friends to vote too. I would really appreciate it!

Thanks,
Elaine”

You're very welcome, Janelle! And I hope you're not offended that I used "girl" in the title rather than "woman." I couldn't resist the way it kinda rhymed with "world." :-)

    Best of luck to you!
